Portal 2, Valve’s critically acclaimed puzzle-platformer, has long been celebrated for its innovative gameplay, compelling narrative, dark humor and is widely regarded as one of the best co-op experiences of all time. Now, thanks to the incredible efforts of talented modder Gistix, the game is now playable in 6DOF VR with motion controls. Gistix has literally created a portal into this beloved world, letting players fully and physically step into Aperture Labs for the first time.
A Whole New Way To Experience A Classic
Experiencing the iconic world of Portal in VR is nothing short of transformative. The sterile, enigmatic chambers of Aperture Science come to life around you in a way that a flat screen could never capture. With the portal gun in your actual hands, players can feel the weight and precision of each portal placement, making the game’s intricate puzzles even more immersive and engaging.
The familiar voice of GLaDOS, echoing around you, becomes more menacing, heightening the sense of being trapped in her labyrinthine experiments. The spatial challenges of Portal, already a mind-bending experience in traditional gameplay, take on a new depth and complexity when players can physically look around, beneath, and through their surroundings. It’s a surreal blend of challenge and immersion, making the world of Portal feel both familiar and entirely new.
Features and Gameplay
The VR mod has been heavily tested for the single-player mode of Portal 2 (but also should fully work in co-op multiplayer, though this hasn’t been extensively tested yet). It introduces motion controls for the portal gun, 6DOF roomscale movement and a host of other features to make for a great VR experience.
Though the entire game is playable from start to finish in VR now, there still may be things that could use polishing or issues that need to be ironed out. Already, Gistix has pushed out several fixes and updates due to player feedback. Join the Discord for updates, issue reporting or to get help:
