Time Stops but the Game is On
In a VR gaming landscape that at times can seem very derivative, Fast Travel Games has revealed a title that promises to upend the status quo. “Mannequin,” announced this past Wednesday, is an asymmetric multiplayer VR game set to launch in 2024. Tailor-made for the new generation of VR headsets like Meta Quest 3, PS VR2, and SteamVR, “Mannequin” will test your nerve, your reflexes, and your ability to deceive.
When Time Stands Still
The narrative of “Mannequin” unravels in a world frozen in time due to the appearance of extraterrestrial beings—aptly called Mannequins by humans. As a player, you can join the ranks of these alien Mannequins or become a Special Agent deployed to neutralize them. The backdrop is eerie and dark, populated by First Responders turned into lifeless statues.
Gameplay Mechanics
In matches involving up to five players, the game pits three Mannequins against two Agents in a high-stakes game of hide-and-seek. Mannequins possess the unique ability to freeze themselves and blend in with the statues of frozen first responders. Agents, on the other hand, are equipped with state-of-the-art EMP Guns and EMF Readers, offering them a technological edge in their quest to neutralize the aliens.
Power Dynamics
Both sides have objectives revolving around Power Stations that are scattered across levels. Mannequins can drain these stations to enhance their abilities, while Agents must prevent this from happening. Failing to control these stations within a set time gives the opposite side an advantage, adding an extra layer of strategy to the gameplay.
Social Elements
For an added layer of immersion, “Mannequin” supports in-game voice chat. Teams can communicate without worrying about the other side eavesdropping, allowing for detailed strategic planning. The lobby also serves as a social space where players can experiment with posing and interact with one another before and after matches.
An Evolution for Fast Travel Games
Notably, this is Fast Travel Games’ first venture into the multiplayer realm and their first original IP since “The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets” in 2019. Considering the studio’s history of engaging single-player VR titles, “Mannequin” signifies a bold new direction.
“Mannequin” isn’t just another game; it’s a testament to the untapped potential of VR to offer truly groundbreaking gameplay concepts and experiences. While the game is set to launch in 2024, the anticipation is already starting to build. Be sure to follow Mannequin on Facebook, X and Instagram to stay up to date with all of the latest news on the game and join the Mannequin Discord to share your excitement with the community.
