Dead Second officially launches on the Meta Quest Store today. Developed by Spunge Games, this popular arcade action cover shooter has developed a cult following during its nearly three-year stint on Meta’s App Lab. The full version of the game contains features and enhancements that will keep even the most experienced veteran coming back for more. Dead Second first made waves in the VR community when it debuted on Meta’s App Lab, quickly becoming one of the best-reviewed titles on the platform. Drawing inspiration from 90’s arcade classics like Time Crisis, Dead Second offered a fresh take on the genre…
Over the course of the last 8 years, Skydance Games has firmly established itself as a premier studio in the VR gaming industry. As the developer of the hugely popular The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, they set a high benchmark for immersive VR experiences, blending realistic physics and intense gameplay with rich storytelling. Now, they are set to raise the bar even higher with their upcoming release, Skydance’s BEHEMOTH. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Skydance Games offices for an exclusive demo of BEHEMOTH. During my visit, I was treated to a substantial demo, as well as…
This past week, Sinn Studio, the VR studio behind the popular melee combat title Swordsman VR, announced the successful closure of a $2.5 million funding round. This substantial investment will help to drive the development of “the world’s first real-time player vs. player VR combat game,” leveraging advanced spatial computing technologies. The funding round was led by Hartmann Capital, with contributions from Boost VC, Republic, Alumni Ventures, Mana Ventures, MetaVision, and notable industry angels such as Chris Ye of Uken Games. The new project, currently under the working title “BATTLEGROUNDS,” will be a free-to-play game powered by Sinn Studio’s proprietary…
Funktronic Labs has just rolled out another surprise update for The Light Brigade. The move to version 3.0, dubbed ‘Shadow Hunter,’ has the potential to be the most significant update yet, adding a host of enhancements and new content to the fan-favorite roguelike shooter. Available today across PSVR2, Steam, and Meta Quest platforms, this free update brings a new level, new buffs, and a new character class that fundamentally changes the game. Central to the ‘Shadow Hunter’ update is the introduction of the Hunter class, a master of stealth, wielding a recurve bow and equipped with throwing knives. This new…
Today marks a great day for VR horror fans (such as myself), as OVRDARK makes its debut on the PS VR2 platform. Developed by Nox Noctis, a studio that’s been flying somewhat under the radar compared to some of the more notable studios in the VR scene, OVRDARK is a dark horse that has quickly become the center of attention due to a somewhat unexpected turn of events. OVRDARK offers a tense adventure set in a cursed mansion, where players face off against a former ally turned into a rabidly aggressive foe. You play as George Foster, a bold investigator…
It seems to have been a rough few months for Perp Games. At the very least, there must have been some moments of high stress, as PS VR2’s most active publishing company has worked tirelessly to put a proper exclamation point on a run that has delivered a number of high-profile ports to Sony’s platform. Over the course of PS VR2’s short history, no one has been busier, as the studio has announced title after title, with every announcement bringing gamers to a whole new level of hype, anticipation, and enthusiasm. But over the last few months, Perp has been…
“Why can’t we just have VR versions of every game?” It’s a question that has come up many times over the past few years. With every amazing launch of a big budget VR port and with every botched launch of a half baked tech demo, the chorus gets louder and louder. Yet every time the question has been asked, we’ve been met with a different excuse as to why it’s just not possible. We’ve been told that our hardware isn’t strong enough to handle it, or that VR is too isolating. Some have said that 3rd person games won’t work…
In an industry where the lines between virtual and reality blur more by the day, GSI’s Leeroy bursts onto the scene with the subtlety of an incognito X-Bot on the PlayStation subreddit. Scheduled for a somewhat optimistic 2024 release, this VR party game is like a Mark Zuckerburg MMA exhibition– it’s slightly awkward but endearingly ambitious. Leeroy aims to bring together the dozens (yes, dozens) of VR enthusiasts still convinced that their headsets are more than pricey paperweights. With a proprietary blend of internet memes, pop culture, and that undeniable charm of early 2000s internet humor, it’s essentially the gaming…
This week marks a significant milestone for Combat Waffle Studios, as their already popular VR extraction shooter, Ghosts of Tabor, has finally made its way to the official Meta Quest store. This is a fitting encore to a year in 2023 that saw the game amass a significant following, breaking sales records and garnering numerous awards along the way. The game’s transition from App Lab to the official store serves not only as the final step in this amazing journey through Early Access, but also as a potential first step to a new high point for the VR FPS genre.…
The Metro series, a cornerstone of post-apocalyptic storytelling in video games, is on the edge of a leap into the new era. With the announcement of Metro VR: Awakening, this beloved franchise is now expanding into the virtual realm, offering its fans an immersive experience like never before. Developed by Vertigo Games in collaboration with Deep Silver, and penned by the original creator Dmitry Glukhovsky, this VR installment promises to be a significant and impactful addition to the series. The Metro series, inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky’s novels, paints a grim picture of a post-nuclear Russia where survivors cling to life…
