Breachers’ Move to PS VR2 Puts Firewall Ultra in the Crosshairs

Yesterday on X (Twitter), developer Triangle Factory made a totally unexpected announcement that has the PS VR2 community buzzing with excitement: Breachers, the extremely popular tactical VR shooter, is making its way to PlayStation VR 2 next month. The move promises not only to bring enhanced visuals and gameplay to PS VR 2, but it also throws down the gauntlet to the other PS VR2 shooters, particularly Firewall Ultra, which has been struggling to retain its player base since its botched launch this past August.

Breachers’ rise to popularity has been quite impressive. Released in April, it quickly gained notoriety for its familiar tactical gameplay mechanics, drawing inspiration from iconic titles such as Rainbow Six: Siege and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The game delivers an addictive 5v5 team-based experience, where teams alternate between playing as “attackers” breaching a bomb site and “defenders” trying to stop their advance.

Triangle Factory’s announcement also showcased some of the enhancements made possible by PS VR2’s unique hardware. Not only will the PS5 allow for a substantial visual upgrade, but the Sense controller’s unique features such as adaptive triggers will provide players with the most immersive version of the game to date. The studio has also announced crossplay support, assuring PS VR2 gamers that they won’t have to burn up too much time waiting to get in the game.

Breachers’ entry into this space comes at a time when Firewall Ultra, developed by First Contact Entertainment, is facing substantial challenges. Once hailed as the premier tactical VR shooter, Firewall has become subject to widespread criticism following a launch marred by multiple gameplay bugs and issues with matchmaking. Of course, the Firewall faithful have been patiently waiting for FCE to right the ship. With that said, the announcement of Breachers’ imminent launch on PS VR2 should prove to be, quite literally, a game changer.

Will this new competition bring the best out of FCE, pushing them to elevate Firewall Ultra to its full potential? Or will Breachers’ debut on PS VR2, with its unique approach and established player base, completely overshadow Firewall, cementing the latter as nothing more than the best of the VR’s first generation? Only time will tell how this battle will ultimately play out, but one thing is for certain: Whenever talented studios compete in an emerging marketplace, the players always win.
