Without a doubt, Bolverk Games’ Genotype has been one of 2023’s biggest and most pleasant surprises for me. This recently released Meta Quest exclusive offers a unique blend of FPS-style action and adventure, supported by an interesting sci-fi narrative that’s set in a secret Antarctic research base. Players use experimental-tech gloves to print living organisms, using them as weapons and survival tools.
Whether it’s the game’s impressive audio and visuals, original sci-fi narrative, or the familiar but fun gameplay and progression, Genotype displays a level of quality and polish that standalone VR has been lacking for some time. With that said, it appears that this excellent sci-fi action/adventure won’t be a Meta Quest exclusive for long.
In their third surprise announcement over the span of the last week, Bolverk Games has just revealed that Genotype will soon debut on Steam VR, sometime in the first half of 2024. The game’s Steam page goes live today, so be sure to add it to your wishlist, if you’re into atmospheric sci-fi action.
Genotype’s Steam reveal comes alongside a handful of significant updates to the game on the Meta Quest platform. The first update introduced enhanced volumetric lighting, reworked environments, all new difficulty settings, gameplay balancing and more. This sizable update was quickly followed by another that brought about a pretty substantial resolution bump for Meta Quest 3 users. In fact, Genotype now runs at native resolution on the Meta Quest 3 – a full 27% visual improvement for a game that was already quite pleasing to the eyes.
So this all sounds pretty great, right? But there’s still one problem: even after all of these significant improvements, $35 is still a lot of money for an indie, standalone VR title. If Genotype’s somewhat steep launch price has caused a few patient VR gamers to sit back and wait for a sale, then they didn’t have to wait for very long. Genotype is currently on sale at a price of $22 from now until November 27. Better yet, Bolverk Games has announced that following the sale, the game will see a permanent price drop to $25, a $10 reduction from its original price of $35. This move makes the game a must own for most current and potential Meta Quest users, as we move into this year’s holiday shopping season.

Ah man, I use my Quest 3 mainly as a PCVR headset and this was currently the only game on my quest wishlist. Guess it’s time to remove that and wait for the Steam release! Hopefully we can get even more graphics upgrades.
