The work of XR Women is not just about highlighting achievements but about creating a supportive and inclusive environment where women can lead, innovate, and inspire.
This year’s AWE (Augmented World Expo) was a huge milestone for the organization that is focused on how the world will consume information on training, marketing, entertainment, social, and more through an augmented digital lens. Not only was it AWE’s first time hosting the conference in Long Beach, CA, but it was also the organization’s 15th anniversary!
To embrace the past 15 years of immersive technology, AWE had an amazing schedule of speakers, sessions, networking, and a demo-filled expo floor that helped attendees see how this type of technology is impacting enterprise solutions in all industries as well as our day-to-day lives.
AWE wasn’t the only organization celebrating a giant 15-year milestone; other organizations also came to Long Beach to celebrate their own milestones and recognize significant achievements from the past year. One such organization was XR Women.
Founded by Julie Smithson, Karen Alexander, and Sophia Moshasha, XR Women stands at the forefront of bringing awareness and recognition to women who are pioneering meaningful solutions with emerging XR technology. This year, the XR Women held their award ceremony on the new Expo Hall stage of AWE, and not only did organizers announce the winners of the 2024 Awards, they also announced their first-ever XR Women Student Chapter with Ringling College of Art and Design.
XRUpdate talked with Julie Smithson about the importance of XR Women. She told us, “Highlighting women for their work and their roles in leadership positions is vital.” Smithson explained that despite the advancements in technology, only a meager 2% of VC funds are allocated to women-led companies. XR Women aims to change this narrative by increasing investment and support for women who are leading and innovating in the XR field.
By shining a spotlight on these trailblazers, XR Women not only acknowledges their contributions but also paves the way for future generations of women in tech, according to Smithson.
The XR Women Awards at AWE were a testament to the power and influence of the community Smithson speaks of. “The event was truly incredible, with more than 70 women celebrating in person, represented globally,” Smithson remarked. The awards honored three exceptional women: Sonya Haskins for Real World Impact, Amy Hedrick for Innovation, and Dr. Muhsinah Morris for Trailblazer. Each winner received a Looking Glass Go, a symbol of their groundbreaking work in the XR space, along with their prestigious XR Women award.
What stood out most to Smithson during the AWE Expo Hall event was the overwhelming support and presence of women and their allies. “It was an exciting time to witness significant growth in our industry,” she noted. The event not only celebrated individual achievements but also underscored the collective strength and unity of the XR Women community.
XR Women has announced the establishment of its first student chapter at Ringling College of Art and Design. “Ringling College, with its Virtual Reality Program, was a great first choice,” Smithson explained. The college’s blend of artistic and technical education provides a solid foundation for building with immersive technologies and made it the perfect choice for the first-ever chapter.
Smithson’s hopes for the student chapter are ambitious. She envisions increased mentorship, new job opportunities, and a stronger link between education and business. “Building a collaboration link between education and business is a recipe that supports the economy and the future of work.” Smithson strongly believes this initiative aims to engage the next generation, equipping them with the skills and connections needed to thrive in the XR industry.
As XR Women continues to grow, its impact is felt across the globe. The organization hosts weekly immersive events, workshops, and business showcases, alongside a thriving merchandise store and the development of more student chapters. Smithson welcomes donations and sponsorships to support these initiatives, ensuring that women in XR continue to receive the recognition and resources they deserve.
“We are a global community thriving and building a significant footprint,” said Smithson. She added, “the work of XR Women is not just about highlighting achievements but about creating a supportive and inclusive environment where women can lead, innovate, and inspire.”
It is clear that XR Women is not just an organization; it is a movement that is redefining the XR industry. By championing women and fostering a collaborative community, XR Women is ensuring that the future of XR technology is inclusive, diverse, and driven by the best and brightest minds.
